Carm’s Water Festival – Aug 18, 19, 2012

by riamn. Average Reading Time: about a minute.

You’re invited to Cambodian Association of Rochester, MN (CARM)’s first annual Water Festival. Silver Lake in the summertime is the place for family gathering: loved ones picnic by the lake, children jump and swing at the playground, teenagers skateboard at the nearby rink, and young-at-heart adults groove to music by the creek. CARM’s Water Festival is a unique family-friendly celebration, where you can enjoy entertainment, food, and music in the park. Over two days in August, the Water Festival will create a lifetime of memories for all.

The Water Festival traditionally occurs once a year and celebrates the reverse flow between the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers, two very important rivers in Cambodia. This natural occurrence is celebrated in Cambodia with three days of festivals, parades, boat races, fireworks, and general merriment.

People come from far and wide to join the celebrations. School is closed, and most workers go on vacation. Upwards of a million Cambodians gather at the river banks to celebrate; those who can’t find hotel rooms often just camp out along the streets!

Join the Cambodian Association of Rochester Minnesota (CARM) as we bring this ancient tradition to our very own Rochester!
